Celtics to Retire No. 6 Jersey

Patch on NBA Jerseys Honors Bill Russell's Legacy

Five Players Have Worn No. 6 for the Celtics

The Boston Celtics announced today that they will retire the No. 6 jersey, which has been worn by five players in franchise history. The move comes as part of the NBA's league-wide initiative to honor the legacy of Bill Russell, who passed away in July.

Russell, a Celtics legend, amassed 11 NBA titles during his 13-year career. He was a five-time NBA MVP and a 12-time All-Star. Russell's No. 6 jersey has been retired by the Celtics since 1972, but it will now be officially retired league-wide.

The five players who have worn No. 6 for the Celtics are Ed Macauley, K.C. Jones, Bill Russell, Tommy Heinsohn, and Sam Jones. All five players are Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Famers.

The Celtics will hold a ceremony to retire the No. 6 jersey on November 11, 2022, when the team hosts the Miami Heat. The ceremony will be part of the Celtics' "Legends Night" celebration, which will also honor Paul Pierce, Kevin Garnett, and Ray Allen.
