Major 7.4-Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Chile
Antofagasta Region Epicenter, No Infrastructure Damage Reported
A powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 7.4 has struck the Antofagasta region of Chile, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS). The quake occurred on Thursday at 10:51 p.m. local time (01:51 UTC), with its epicenter located approximately 30 kilometers (19 miles) east of San Pedro de Atacama.
So far, there are no reports of any casualties, injuries, or significant damage to infrastructure. The Chilean National Emergency Office (ONEMI) has stated that it is currently evaluating the situation and has not yet issued any evacuation orders.
The quake was felt in several regions of Chile, including Tarapacá, Antofagasta, and parts of the Atacama Desert. Residents reported experiencing strong shaking and tremors, but no major disruptions to power or telecommunications have been reported.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center issued a tsunami warning following the earthquake, but later canceled it as no significant tsunami activity was observed. However, the Chilean Hydrographic and Oceanographic Service (SHOA) has advised residents in coastal areas to remain vigilant and follow official instructions if any tsunami advisories or warnings are issued.
Geologists from the USGS have stated that this earthquake is not related to any known major active faults in the region. They attribute it to the subduction of the Nazca Plate beneath the South American Plate, which is common in this area. Aftershocks are likely to occur in the coming days and weeks, but their magnitude is expected to diminish over time.
The Chilean government has activated its emergency response protocols and is working to assess the extent of the damage and provide assistance to any affected communities. Residents are advised to stay informed, follow official updates, and prepare for potential aftershocks.
