BREAKING: Blewett Fire Closes U.S. 97
HIGHEST EVACUATION LEVELS IN PLACE
The Blewett Fire in Washington has closed U.S. 97, and the highest levels of evacuation have been ordered as the fire continues to grow.
FIRES CONTINUE TO BURN
The fire, which started on August 12, has burned over 100,000 acres and is only 10% contained. The fire is burning in heavy timber and brush, and the hot, dry weather conditions are making it difficult to contain.
THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE EVACUATED
Thousands of people have been evacuated from their homes, and several communities are under threat. The American Red Cross has set up shelters for evacuees, and donations are being accepted.
HIGHWAY 97 CLOSED
U.S. 97 is closed between milepost 151 near Blewett Pass and milepost 171 near Wenatchee. The closure is expected to last for several days, and motorists are advised to use alternate routes.
HIGHEST EVACUATION LEVELS
The Chelan County Sheriff's Office has ordered Level 3 evacuations for the communities of Blewett, Coles Corner, and Chiwaukum. Level 3 evacuations mean that residents must leave their homes immediately.
FIREFIGHTERS BATTLE BLAZE
Firefighters are working around the clock to contain the fire, but the hot, dry weather conditions are making it difficult. Air tankers and helicopters are dropping water and retardant on the fire, and ground crews are working to build fire lines.
DONATIONS NEEDED
The American Red Cross is accepting donations to help those affected by the fire. Donations can be made online at redcross.org or by calling 1-800-RED-CROSS.
